Certain People (2012) MIFF Film Review

images-1

Sweden, summer.  A group of friends get together to celebrate a birthday at a house in the country. A brother and his new girlfriend, a brash blonde bombshell, appear. Everyone drinks a lot. People say things they regret. Everyone leaves.

There’s not really a lot more to this. It’s an exploration of people and relationships, but the characters are not well-developed. Consequently, it feels like a film that was made from an early draft of the script. The various scenes seem to be intending to delve into the depths of these characters, but as the characters are not very deep, it’s not very satisfying. There is beautiful scenery and some quite hilarious conversations, but not enough to keep me engaged.
