When A City Falls (2011) MIFF Film Review

As most of us remember, Christchurch and the surrounding areas were struck by several huge earthquakes at the end of 2010 start of 2011, causing death and destruction across the area. When a City Falls  is how director and resident Gerard Smyth tries to make sense of the aftermath. Smyth began recording interviews and collating footage after the first quake, talking to residents about their experiences and how they are getting through.

At almost two hours long, the film could certainly have been cut down, however it was absolutely heartbreaking, yet quite inspirational. It is very interesting to see something which goes beyond the news reports that followed in the days after the events, to see how the event effects lives very similar to our own.
