by Jonas Jonasson
This is the fantastical story of Allan Karlsson, a man who escapes from his nursing home just before his birthday party. Part of the book in dedicated to the adventures he undertakes after leaving the home, and the rest tells of the journey that his life was before he ended up in the nursing home.
I enjoyed the general story; especially the way Jonasson has intertwined the history of Karlsson into real world events across the globe. His adventures were interesting, but it was all quite emotionless. I’m not sure whether this was from the translation or if it was just the distant manner of the writing. Essentially, I found it a very good yarn, but I felt totally disconnected from the characters and didn’t have any investment in what happened to them.
Still, it is one of my favourite book titles ever.
