Soul Kitchen (2009) Film Review

Zinos (Adam Bousdoukos) runs the Soul Kitchen, a restaurant based in an industrial area that is losing money. His girlfriend Nadine (Pheline Kruger) has left for China, and he wants to follow her. His brother Illias (Moritz Bleibtreu) is on parole and uses the restaurant as a cover. Meantime, the restaurant is dealing with the tax department, the health department, a new chef and the increasing issues with Zino’s injured back.

It just felt like there was too much going on, storylines that seemed to be focusing mainly on extending the length of the film with further conflict, but really brought little to the film. It felt very much like a first or second film from a young director. Looking it up on IMDB, director Fatih Akin has made quite a few films. The style is good, the pace is good. It just needed some work on the script.
