Animal People by Charlotte Wood – Book Review

Unknown-2

Stephen lives in Sydney, works at a food stall in the zoo and is about to break up with his girlfriend, Fiona. Animal People follows Stephen for a day. That’s it.

It seems simple, perhaps not enough to sustain a full-length novel, but it is being inside the mind of this man that is compelling. He’s flawed and foolish and many of his thoughts and decisions left me wanting to shout “Don’t be so stupid” at him. I read this in two sittings; I just couldn’t put it down and walk away. I needed to get to the end of the day. I needed to know if there was any chance that Stephen would be alright.
