The Testament of Mary by Colm Toibin – Book Review

This is an imagining of what Mary (as in the mother of Jesus) may have gone through after the crucifixion of her son. In it, Mary does not believe that Jesus was the son of God, but merely a charismatic man who managed to obtain a following.

I became interested in the novel after seeing the magnificent Pamela Rabe perform the monologue of the book last year.  I believe that the monologue was the exact text, and it was an amazing performance. Reading it was like revisiting the play which I enjoyed, but I feel that it would also have made a fabulous read without having seen the play.
