Carry Me Down by MJ Hyland – Book Review

Set in Ireland, John Egan is a 12-year-old who is finding his place in the world. He knows that adults are not always truthful, but doesn’t know how to relate this to himself. The adults around him are dealing with gambling problems and drinking and violence and poverty, and he is somewhere in the mix, not understanding and try to work it all out.

I love MJ Hyland’s writing, but I always need to pick when to read her books as they are intense and emotionally challenging. Carry Me Down is beautiful in the innocence of the main character, as well as being heart-breaking and tough and wonderful.
