The Miniaturist by Jesse Burton – Book Review

Nella is an 18-year-old from a small town in Holland who is married to a rich Merchant and moves to Amsterdam. It’s the 1680s, the Dutch were leading international trading (along with colonisation and all that comes with it) and where there is money, there is also drama. Nella struggles to fit into this world, and when her husband gifts her a very expensive cabinet replica of their house. She engages the services of a mysterious ‘miniaturist’ to create some furniture for the house, but when pieces start to arrive, they are closer to reality than Nella can believe.

This is such a strange story, and quite wonderful. I would have been pleased enough just to read of this odd marriage and the strange family, but adding in the strangeness of the miniaturist and their creations was just delightful.
