What I Loved by Siri Hustvedt – Book Review

Leo is an art historian and critic and Bill is an acclaimed painter. They become friends as young men and the book follows their relationship over decades through marriages and children, love and loss, and is a beautiful but hard book.

The relationships are complex and telling the story over such a long period time gave it time to breathe. I especially love the descriptions of Bill’s artwork, and I’d love to see these brought to life by a variety of artists and put on display. Though given the book was written more than 15 years ago, perhaps that may not happen.
