Who Fears Death by Nnedi Okorafor – Book Review

It’s this strange, post-apocalyptic land, lots of desert, with different people who occupy their own space. The Nuru oppress the Okeke, sacking their villages, killing many and raping many of the women. Onyesonwu is an Ewu – the child of an Okeke woman raped by a Nuru man. But there is more to her than appears. This is a world with magic and power, and Onyesonwu is out to change the future for her people.

This is hard book to read – there are some pretty traumatic scenes, quite a bit of violence, but it’s worth getting through this for the story. Onyesonwu is great, I love her. I didn’t necessarily appreciate all the choices she made, and at times, I found the world a little confusing. But it was beautiful and strong and fabulous and I definitely recommend it for those who enjoy a bit of hard dystopian fiction.
