Women, Men and the Whole Damn Thing by David Leser – Book Review

In 2018, not long after the accusations of sexual harassment and assault against Harvey Weinstein came out and opened the floodgates of the #metoo movement, David Leser wrote an article about it in the Good Weekend. I read this article, and my first thought was about how little we needed to hear from men at this time. Turns out, that’s what a lot of people thought and he got slammed for it. What I will say is that it was a pretty decent article from a man who genuinely had not considered what life is like for many women in a patriarchal society, though really not very well timed.

Now, he’s written a book, and the foreword addresses the article, the poor timing of it, and expresses a bit of regret over it. The rest of the book is a bit of an explanation of the place women hold in society, how the patriarchy impacts on both women and men, and what toxic masculinity is. There really wasn’t anything in there that I didn’t know, and I got a bit angry reading stuff which is everyday for women in society but appears to be a revelation to someone who lives in that society. For me, this is a book which is good for men who want to know about the shit place that women occupy explained to them by a man. It’s fine, it’s useful, and it inspired me to finally get around to reading Boys Will Be Boys and Fight Like a Girl by Clementine Ford.
