Until last year, I hadn’t heard for the Atlanta Child Murders, where over a couple of years, at least 28 African-American children were killed by a serial killer, most remaining unsolved. Suddenly, it pops up in the second season of Mindhunter, as well as when Tayari Jones appeared at the Melbourne Writers Festival. Jones grew up in Atlanta during this time and this, her first novel, is written from the perspective of three children living in the area and having friends and classmates disappear. It’s an amazing book. It’s beautiful and painful and horrific, and very wonderful.
