Olive is an odd child – picked on by kids at school, but not really understanding why. She spends a lot of time on the farm with her with her aunts and uncle and cousins. However there is something she feels her family is hiding from her, and in her small child way, she goes to investigate.
Often, appreciation for a book can depend on when it is read, in particular around other books. I only recently read Jasper Jones (actually, I also listened to that as an audio book) and I’ve read a lot of small country town stories set in the past from a child’s perspective, and I think that really dampened my enjoyment of this book. Having said that, it’s a very good book which I enjoyed a lot. I chose it because it was shortlisted for the 2019 Stella Prize, which in my mind means quality.
