Set on the coast of Scotland, The Bass Rock covers several women’s lives. There’s a young woman in the 1700s who’s been accused of withcraft, there’s a woman in the post WW2 era raising the children of a distant husband and there’s a woman in contemporary times who is preparing the house for sale.
I loved this so much. I loved the three stories, and the way connections appear between them – sometimes direct connections, sometimes tenuous links. It’s a beautiful book, wonderful and deeply flawed characters.
The Bass Rock won the Stella Prize for 2021.
