Hope Farm by Peggy Frew – Book Review

Silver is 13 and has been raised by her hippy mother, Ishtar, in a series of communes which are all a blur. Then her mother meets Miller and goes to a remote farm in a small, rural community and they move to an unsuccessful commune on a farm, and Silver withdraws further. But she makes a friend and finds a way to get through.

Reading this book made me feel cold and angry. Ishtar is self-centred and seems barely able to meet even the most basic requirements for being a mother. And yet Frew has written a book so beautifully crafted that I found I couldn’t hate Ishtar regardless of how much I wanted to save Silver.
