The Fish Girl by Mirandi Riwoe – Book Review

This novella, which is loosely based on a quote from Somerset Maugham, tells the story of an Indonesian girl who moves from her fishing village to work in the house of a Dutch merchant.

The writing is beautiful, the world is lush and strange, Mina is sweet and innocent, but this book just didn’t speak to me. I know I am absolutely in the minority here, as not only is it highly reviewed by many, it also won the 2017 Seizure Viva La Novella Prize and it was shortlisted for the 2018 Stella Prize. I guess different people like different things.
