What a fascinating character Gore Vidal is. I knew of his literature and that he was an outspoken commentator on society. I did not know – well, I did not know just about everything else.
The United States of Amnesia follows Vidal from his childhood through his life, but it is not simply a biographical piece. His story is told through his work, through his television appearances and through his statements.
Gore Vidal passed away in 2012, but will be remembered through his work for generations. I hope I recall some of the marvelous quotes featured in this film. “I never miss a chance to have sex or appear on television.” “It is not enough to succeed. Others must fail.” “The United States was founded by the brightest people in the country – and we haven’t seen them since.” What a man.
